Schloss Waldeck

The Waldeck Castle built on a rock towers 200 m over the lake Edersee. Since 2009 the former fortification shines in new splendour and is regarded as a fabulous gourmet restaurant.

Waldeck castle rests on the remnants of an 11th-century fortification, towering over the town of Waldeck and offering a breathtaking view of the lake, the national park and the Kellerwald-Edersee nature reserve.

In autumn 2009, Volker Deigendesch reopened the redesigned Hotel Schloss Waldeck. After cautious, yet thorough renovation and interior decoration the charming castle atmosphere was complemented by modern amneties. Warm colours and natural materials blend in with the castles rugged medieval walls and radiate a feeling of security. All 42 rooms grant an unforgettable panorama view over the Waldeck countryside and lake Edersee.

At the gourmet restaurant “Alte Turmuhr” culinary delights are served. Chef Falko Sowinski’s specialty is the innovative combination of regional produce with exotic fare, with surprising and beautiful results. A cosy fireside lounge as well as the spa with its own garden serve as recreational areas.

From the 11th up to the 18th century, Waldeck was, as the family seats of the Counts of Waldeck, also the seat of government. Having acquired the titular dignities of Prince, the Counts moved to the new Arolsen Castle. Waldeck then became the main national archive, an armoury, national jail, as well as the royal forestry head office, before adpoting its present day purpose as a castle hotel. Today the massive castle walls shine in new splendour and welcome their guests with warmth and elegance at Hotel Schloss Waldeck.

The eventful centuries of castle history are to be experienced on a guided tour of the castle through the dungeons, vaults and the 120 m deep well. From the time dating back to the national jail, the museum reports with the caption „under lock and key“.
