The present day Hornbach Monastery was established in 742 by St. Pirminius as a Benedictine monastery. The gentle hill landscape of the southwest Palatinate corresponded with the monks´ ideal place of sanctuary for self-reflection.

In the centuries to follow the monastery experienced a moving history: from the blossoming of a small monastery to its nearly complete dereliction. After several years of restoration and renovation, the former monastery ruin was ready to be opened as a hotel in May 2000.

Traces of the past can be discovered in the Historama Museum as well as in the herb garden of the founding Father of Botany, Hieronymus Bock, who lived in Hornbach in the 16th century as a teacher and preacher.
