In the 14th century about 250 descendants from the House of Schoenburg lived in the Ganerben Castle at the same time, since all the sons of the burgrave were entitled to inherit.

The last of the Schoenburgs acquired much fame, as a French general in the 17th century, before the castle was burned down in 1689 by the troops of Ludwig XIV. In 1885 the influential German American banker Rhinelan der, restored large parts of the castle. Since 1957 the Huettl family has owned the estate. Since then the restorations were continued and a castle hotel was established.
